NC has relatively expensive natural gas service for residential customers.

In 2004, NC’s average residential natural gas costs were nearly 20% higher than the national average, giving it the 11th highest residential costs in the US and the 5th highest costs in the region.

In recent years, however, NC’s residential natural gas prices have risen at a slower pace than the US average.

Affordable and plentiful natural gas service is a prerequisite for many corporate expansion or relocation decisions, and residential costs provide a proxy indicator of natural gas access.

In 2001, NC had the highest overall and industrial natural gas prices in the SE region, and the 8th highest aggregate prices and 14th highest industrial prices in the nation (Source: US Energy Department, Energy Information Administration).
