NC’s national ranking was 31st and its regional ranking was 6th, the same rankings it had in 1995.

  Definition (What Is Being Measured)
Reported number of violent crimes (e.g., murders, rapes, robberies and aggravated assaults) committed per 100,000 population.
Source: US Federal Bureau of Investigation, Crime in the United States, Annual Uniform Crime Reports; rankings from Morgan Quitno & NC Office of State Budget, Planning and Management
Relevance (Why This Is Important)
The reported violent crime rate provides a reliable indicator of serious criminal behavior and attendant social ills; lower crime rates are good news for a variety of social characteristics, including economic and community vitality.
