reported violent crime rate provides a reliable indicator of serious
criminal behavior and attendant social ills; lower crime rates
are good news for a variety of social characteristics, including
economic and community vitality. |

2004, the state’s violent crime rate declined another
1.7%, with robberies falling 5.8%. However, the rate of
intentional killings did not change and the reported number
of rapes soared 7.5%. |

2003, the rate of violent crime fell 5.3% statewide (Source:
NC Dept. of Justice). More specifically, NC’s murder
rate decreased by 10.3%, the rape rate declined 6%, the
robbery rate decreased by 3.3% and the aggravated assault
rate fell 6.1%. |
