North Carolina Public Health is Division Department of Health
and Human Services (DHHS); responsible for protecting and
improving health of people of North Carolina.
Organizational Structure
11 departments (see organizational chart ) and 10 boards and commissions including Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Health, Governor’s Task Force for Healthy Carolinians, NC Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention and Commission for Health Service

Key Services
Chronic Disease and Injury - Working to reduce death and disabilities through education, policy change
to ensure a productive and healthy life for all North Carolinians

State Center for Health Statistics - Responsible for data collection, health-related research, production
of reports, and maintenance of a comprehensive collection of health statistics

State Laboratory of Public Health - Provides medical and environmental laboratory services (testing,
consultation and training) to public and private health provider organizations

Initiatives and Achievements

  • Local Accreditation: In 2002, undertook initiative to develop standards-based-system for accrediting local public health departments throughout the state
  • Eat Smart, Move More NC: in 2000, initiative to increase opportunities for physical activity and healthy eating, implemented by Physical Activity and Nutrition (PAN) Unit of DPH
