Regional Policy Institutes

SouthNow The Program on Southern Politics, Media and Public Life is a non-partisan organization connecting the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to Southern leadership. It's primary gaol is to provide common ground on which civic, business, journalistic and political leaders from diverse backgrounds can exchange ideas to common challenges.
Southern Growth Policies Board A non-partisan public policy think tank that develops and advances visionary economic development policies by providing a forum for partnership and dialog among a diverse cross-section of the region's governors, legislators, business and academic leaders and the economic- and community-development sectors.
Democracy South A non-partisan, non-profit regional network of state-based and regional organizations in the Southeast dedicated to helping build, strengthen, and link progressive, multi-issue, multi-racial coalitions that can address economic, social, and environmental justice issues at the state level, and to collaborate on regional strategies.
The Institute for Southern Studies A resource for grassroots activists, community leaders, scholars, policy makers and others working to bring lasting social and economic change to the region by drawing attention to the national importance of the South and offering a vision of the region.
MDC, Inc. Making a difference in communities in the South by expanding opportunity, reducing poverty, and building inclusive civic cultures. Core strategies include developing responsive public policies; demonstrating effective programs; building institutional and community capacity for progress; and informing the public through dialogue.
North Carolina Rural Center Develops, promotes, and implements sound economic strategies to improve the quality of life of rural North Carolinians and serves the state's 85 rural counties with a special focus on individuals with low to moderate incomes and communities with limited resources.
Southern Governor's Association Represents the common interests of Southern states' chief executives and provides a vehicle for promoting them by providing a bipartisan, regional forum to help shape and implement national policy and to solve state and regional problems.
Southern Legislative Conference The Southern regional component of CSG encourages intergovernmental cooperation among 16 Southern states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia.
Southern Regional Council Promotes racial justice, protects democratic rights and broadens civic participation in the Southern United States through engaging Southern communities on issues of democracy and race.
Center for the Study of the American South (UNC at Chapel Hill) Fosters outstanding scholarship exploring every aspect of the South's rich past and supports the region's democratic and progressive future through programs emphasizing southern history, literature, and culture as well as ongoing social, political, and economic issues.
Center for the Study of Southern Culture (University of Mississippi) A focal point for innovative education and research on the American South promoting scholarship on every aspect of Southern culture and encouraging public understanding of the South through publications, media productions, lectures, performances, and exhibitions.
