Redesigning
the American High School
Summary
– Virginia Governor Mark Warner has decided
to focus the NGA’s efforts in the coming year
on improving American high schools. Because tomorrow’s
economy will require jobs that require education,
skills and training that reach beyond high school,
the NGA believes that a more challenging and meaningful
high school education is critical. The NGA’s
goals are to raise national awareness about the need
to improve America’s high schools, with a particular
focus on the senior year, and create common definitions
for graduation and dropout rates for benchmarking
progress relative to other states. The NGA will hold
learning institutes for senior state educational advisors
on ways states are successfully supporting new high
school options and helping at-risk students to graduate.
The NGA will develop best practices and a "Top
10" list of policy actions to help governors
achieve system-wide high school reform in their states.
