Leads
and supports local boards of health in fulfilling
their responsibilities outlined in North
Carolina's General statutes "to be the policy-making,
rule-making and adjudicatory for local public
health" and "to protect and promote
the public's health." Accomplishes goals
through orientation, education, networking, advocacy,
and by assisting local boards in developing and
practicing effective governance. |

School Forum of NC |
A
not for profit policy think tank partnership
of business leaders, education leaders, and
government leaders in North Carolina. Conducts
research in the public policy arena and oversees
programs in communities across the state inclucing
a network of twenty elementary and middle school
programs that offer young people the hourly
equivalent of eighty additional days of school
and another network of high schools that have
introduced hands-on technology training. |

Business Committee for Education |
An
advocate and catalyst for systemic change
and continuous improvement in public education,
acts as a resource and business voice in
public education to prepare North Carolina
students for employment and to enhance North
Carolina's economic development. The nonpartisan,
nonprofit consortium of businesses from across
the state funds initiatives to address specific
education issues that have a significant
impact on the quality of education children
receive and their ability to enter the workforce
prepared.

A
statewide nonprofit organization representing
the interest of underdeveloped and underutilized
sectors of the state's economic base. The Institute's
working philosophy is that information and business
development are critical to wealth creation
and to building the asset base among low-wealth
sectors of the population and it's mission is
to strengthen the asset base of limited resource
populations as a means of building economically
vibrant and socially responsible communities.

A
nonprofit land conservation organization
that works to permanently protect from development
landscapes of significant environmental,
historical and agricultural value. Through
its Northern Forest Protection Fund OSI has
assisted in the protection of close to 600,000
acres in NY, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine
and recently launched its New Jersey Conservation
Loan Fund to protect threatened landscapes
in the nation’s
most densely populated state. |

(ECHO) |
The
UNC Program on Ethnicity, Culture, and Health
Outcomes works to eliminate health status and
health outcomes disparities through translatable,
evidence-based research, multidisciplinary training
and education, and culturally sensitive service
to North Carolina communities. |

Latin American Resource Center |
The
rapidly changing social and demographic environment
of North Carolina is creating significant challenges
for the state's teachers, students, and parents.
In particular, immigration from Spanish-speaking
countries is transforming North Carolina's communities
and schools, creating a culturally and linguistically
diverse social landscape that holds both new
conflicts and new opportunities. The DIALOGO
- CONEXION, is a development program designed
to help teachers respond to these changes with
increased knowledge, appropriate resources,
energy, and creativity.
